Iranian American Community Shares Persian New Year (Norooz) Celebrations with Portlanders at Salt & Straw with Traditional Iranian Ice Cream
Andisheh Center, a pioneering Iranian American cultural association, has the pleasure of sharing this year's Norooz (New Year) festivities with the Greater Portland community through Iranian-inspired artisan ice cream (Rose City Riot) made by Salt & Straw.
The Persian New Year (Norooz) begins with the Spring Equinox, which is at 4:02a.m. PST on March 20 this year, and its festivities last for thirteen days. During this time, Iranians gather to host family and friends in their homes where they set up a ceremonial table known as Haft-seen. The Haft-seen is decorated with such items as hyacinths, sprouts, colored eggs, coins, and sweets to symbolize rejuvenation of life in spring and prosperity for the New Year. This year, Andisheh Center is proud to work in collaboration with Salt & Straw to gather over ice cream and share the joys of Norooz with our larger community at one of Portland's neighborhood "living rooms."
"At Salt & Straw we are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to work with strong community leaders that infuse Persian inspiration into Portland. In collaboration with the local Iranian community, including the members at Andisheh Center, we've put together an ice cream based off of Akbar Mashti, a rose water ice cream with saffron and pistachios. Celebrating Chahar-shanbeh Soori
ndisheh Center invites you to celebrate Chahar-shanbeh Soori. Please join us as we jump over bonfires on the eve of the last Wednesday of the Persian year followed by Kid's corner, DJ music, and dance. Enjoy Persian food, fruits, sweets, and of course Hot Tea.

Salar Aghili & Hamnavazan Ensemble in Portland
n evening of highly ornamental, exquisite and meditative music. Distinguished singer Salar Aghili, one of the foremost Persian classical vocalists of his generation, is joined by the Hamnavazan Ensemble, featuring Hossein Behroozinia (barbat – lute) and Said Farajpoury (kamancheh – spike fiddle) of the Dastan Ensemble, Harir Shariatzadeh (piano, daf – frame drum), and Behnan Masoumi (tombak – goblet drum, daf). Their repertoire features centuries-old Persian music, and new approaches to rarely heard songs of the past century.
